Program

Join two community members from Central Appalachia whose lives are impacted on a daily basis by the practice of mountaintop removal coal mining, and learn why we must put an end to this form of coal extraction.

Appalachian Voices is helping to end the practice of mountaintop removal coal mining by working with community organizations in coal bearing regions of Appalachia, and by organizing a national educational campaign by gaining support for the Clean Water Protection Act and Appalachia Restoration Act. As a part of this educational campaign, Appalachian Voices is traveling nationwide to share Appalachian Treaures, a multi-media slide show presentation. The presentation depicts the dire situation in Appalachian coal fields and encourages Americans to protect Appalachian communities and some of our nations oldest mountains. A member of the Appalachian Voices staff will be present at this program as a part of this educational campaign.

Photography Exhibit

Since 2005 Mark Schmerling has made numerous visits to the coalfiels of southern West Virginia and Pennsylvania.  Using photography, Mr. Schmerling illustrates the impacts of mountaintop removal and longwall coal mining on the land, Appalachian cutlure, and on communities both close to and far removed from the coal fields. His photographs will be available for viewing during the reception portion of this program (6:00 - 6:30 pm).

Center for Environmental Policy

The goals of the Center for Environmental Policy (CEP) at The Academy of Natural Sciences are to evaluate key issues of environmental policy, facilitate dialogues and decision-making on environmental topics, and inform the public from both an academic as well as practical perspective.  The CEP will answer the need for a non-partisan, science-based organization that is capable of accessing and guiding a myriad of public and private stakeholders.
